It is time for Congress to act on CHIP and MIECHV Funding. This week both chambers of Congress will be back in session. This is the perfect time for them to pass CHIP and MIECHV funding which both expired on September 30th. Ohio’s Kids and families depend on these programs to live healthy lives.
There has been bipartisan support for CHIP since its creation and there continues to be bipartisan support for CHIP. Two bills have been introduced, one in the House (H.R. 3921) and one in the Senate (S. 1827). Both bills still need to be debated and voted on by the full House and Senate, and it remains to be seen when they will take up action on these bills. If the House and Senate each pass a CHIP bill, they will then need to resolve any differences between the bills. Both pieces of legislation are similar in their substance and call for a 5-Year funding extension. 224,000 kids in Ohio are at risk of losing health care if Congress does not act quickly.
Voices thanks Ohio Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown for signaling their support of CHIP. Now we ask them and the entire Ohio Congressional Delegation to act quickly and decisively on behalf of Ohio’s children and families. There is too much at stake to play politics with the future of Ohio’s children.
While the bipartisan support still exists for MIECHV, our progress towards reauthorization continues to be very fluid. The House-passed legislation to reauthorize MIECHV (H.R. 2824) and bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the Senate (S. 1829), which both support a 5-year reauthorization of the program. It is time for Congressional leadership to help get MIECHV over the finish line. We need everyone’s help to ensure that MIECHV is top priority for members and that MIECHV is included in the final legislative package. Our success is highly reliant on the right legislative package developing and expressing the urgency to Members of Congress to act quickly.
The National Home Visiting Coalition is kicking off three days of action to renew MIECHV beginning on Tuesday, October 24 through Thursday, October 26. Voices will be participating and we hope you will too!
